LOL How I wish teachers can make students laugh once in a while :))
“Bad” teachers really shows in different forms. I reflect on what you shared, and it is true to my experience. The “bad” professor for me then scares us all in the Operating Room. She has this big forceps that pinches our hands and drags us out of the room even in the slightest error...like when we unconsciously bring our hands down to waist level. She doesn’t follow the curriculum. She questions the books, she hits clinicians and theorists, and introduces new methods contrary to norms. She is ruthless to students and surprisingly sweet to patients. I really gave my best to her class, in fact it stole most time from other subjects but we never received any gratification or praise everytime we get high grades. She makes the students cry and transfer to other courses. She embarasses parents who complains. The university always sided with her. Her tests were torment. She made me spent my summer vacation volunteering in a public hospital and doing research and the grades I got were merely average...a poor prize for hard work and lovelife lost . I secretly hate her. Now, several years had passed and how I wish I can see her again. I need to thank her.
Most students consider strict, hard-to-convince, teachers as bad because they terrorize instead of “teach”. Some consider nice, considerate teachers as bad also, because it fails to instill discipline nor encourage students to study. It take years to realize that oftentimes those teachers are not really “bad” teachers......we are only bad students.... we either get converted thru learning, or get out of the class acting the same.
Thanks for sharing Pa! :)

Hi, Chris. I think I can identify with your experience. I too was a "bad" teacher. I shifted from one kind of "bad" teacher (as you have described) to another. At one time I was inept but stern, then inept but nice, and at another more competent but harsh, then highly critical, next supportive but ineffectual, then finally, I was good and all of the above rolled into one, fluctuating from one group of students to another, until I got out of teaching.
Most of my intelligent and gracious students, who have become successful in their careers, still acknowledge with gratitude (sometimes to my discomfort, guilt and doubt) that they were fortunate to have been under my tutelage, and that I had inspired and motivated them the most while in high school. Well, I'm just relieved to know i haven't twisted their minds and ruined their ambitions in life (Somehow, I have a feeling that I did kill the dreams of a few).
I had my share of bad teachers in college, but none of them intimidated me. I was often the maverick, and I usually challenged the ideas my teachers introduced just to ward off boredom. (Well, I was humbled when I taught college and met my match--a smart and cocky student, who took delight in behaving the same way I did to my "bad" college teachers.)
I think, I want to try giving your prank test on my students if I go back to teaching someday.
Thanks, for sharing.

Hi Vicky, well compared to my father I was a "bad" teacher. My father was one of the best. I just did not have the confidence that he had.
He was a maths teacher (Like myself) and he taught maths all his working life, and part time till he was 72. I KNOW he was good, not just because others thought he was, but he taught me for my final three years in school.
He became head of maths dept at the school (A Boys Grammar) and when that happened instead of giving the lowest set to the youngest teacher, he took the lowest abilty set, and instead of 2 or 3 passing their "O" level exams, about 20 out of 30 passed. He then made sure that the weakest pupils got one of the top teachers instead of the weakest teacher!

That is so wonderful to note. Math teachers are rarely like that!
Mathematics is the BEST...exact of all sciences, thus making it the most interesting subject but unless the teacher can present the lecture lucidly it gets down the drain, it becomes as "mysterious" as religion/ paranormal subjects. Not all students appreciate Math esp. in grade school. I hate it in grade school in fact (my laziest teacher then was my Math teacher) but my daughter now is so interested in Math. I see the big difference of what a teacher can do.

I wouldn't swear to having good or bad teachers. In later life I discovered about personality traits and believe when the testing is conducted properly give a very good indication of personality http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers_briggs
Understanding that I can see how personality wise one individual gets on badly with another
There is often bigotry brought into the equation, depending where in the world you are, race, gender and religious beliefs are major causes for conflict in any situation.
There is teenage angst as well, If I think about it, nearly 100% I saw occurred in my teens with my peers, so rebellion against authority. I eventually bunked off school more often than I was there
I think I may have been goody goody in class, do what was asked, nothing more, to avoid bringing conflict onto me

It seems you have an in-depth understanding of human behavior ( I'm poor in that).
and looks like u've had great adventures when you bunked off and stayed in school ...
rebellion against superiors is common in uni, and naughty students like to do pranks on the monsters.....err teachers that make their school life miserable. I think being nerd, goody goody isn't fun at all but it keeps us out of trouble and helps us achieve more in school :)

Experience, and exposure, and the way my mind works. I can jump to conclusions, but like to know both sides of a problem.
I am not a role model, just university of life
Teachers were kidz once, they know what might happen.
To help you learn more they have to know how to direct learning at the level of the student, its not good teaching quantum theory when there is no reference to previous learning

Its is one form of personality matching, there are others. All have similar results but they are used by employers to appoint new staff,
And by teams to identify best roles for people to work in to be most productive.
Whilst I understand why this is necessary, it is more useful to show people where their comfort zones for working are and help them to develop areas that would be beneficial to their working life and maybe earn more money.
The key understanding is to recognise who another is and if you want them to do a task, appeal to their strengths (but that is very manipulative)

agreed, except they are human and subject to all the stresses and strains of modern life.
Can't be much fun getting degrees and stuff from books written 5 years earlier and to realise that everything you had learnt has been changed last Wednesday and was all over the internet on the Thursday. You could be 20 years behind the times and really not relevant.
The easiest has to be languages, and mathematics, practical subjects and art.
Sciences and computing change so fast beyond basic principles

man! i read that page & got board to such a wonderful & equally complicated topic :(
i believe that they can make it simple by this type of typing...
"e = exravertion.
i = introversion.
j = judgement.
p = perception.
s = sensing.
n = iNtution.
t = thinking.
f = feeling.
"s = information that can be understood by the five senses.
n = tend to trust information that is more abstract or theoretical, that can be associated with other information (either remembered or discovered by seeking a wider context or pattern).
t = tend to decide things from a more detached standpoint, measuring the decision by what seems reasonable, logical, causal, consistent and matching a given set of rules.
f = tend to come to decisions by associating or empathizing with the situation, looking at it 'from the inside' and weighing the situation to achieve, on balance, the greatest harmony, consensus and fit, considering the needs of the people involved.
j = t + f.
= have matters settled.
*tj = logical.
*fj = empathic (understanding).
p = s + i.
= keep decisions open.
*sp = tend to appear to the world as concrete.
*np = tend to appear to the world as abstract.
e = operate in the external world of behavior, action, people and things.
= j/p :> dominant.
i = operate in the internal world of ideas and reflection.
= j/p :> auxiliary.
entj = ????"
anyway, it's only my theory though. who cares...?
thank u so much, i believed that i was an ambiverted person. i guess i can't say that any more. now i must say that "I DON'T KNOW ME"
so, don't scream, not even whisper my name & forget it... :P

hahahaha The MBTI is a personality inventory, the most common personality assessment tool today. It is a psychometric questionnaire designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. There are many simple presentations for this in the net, books and magazines :))

hello there again vicky,
during my hischool days i had the misfortune of being under a very inconsiderate teacher and at a subject that i really hated...chemistry........
during our classes she just sits there and talk w a very low voice and its in a very unholy hour, after lunch break.....so wat do u expect? most of the time i always talked to my seatmate because we can't hear her at the back.then the inevitable happened......she called me to answer something, was not able to give her the expected answer and she scolded me in a very loud voice and insulted me....
wat i did, because i was taken aback was to retaliate, shouted back at her and did not pass my experiments.naturalmente, i flunked and had to take up summer classes in another school.i dont have any regretswhatsoever, at least i got to shout back at her where no one dared because she was also very strict....

now that's really a bad teacher! and to have her in my 1 pm class (Filipino siesta) is horrible...i might always be caught sleeping in her class. That reminds me of my classmate who stretched out in the floor at the back while my Physics teacher is giving lecture. Nobody noticed till we heard him snoring hahahhaha :)
I would have done what you did without regret.

when i was working, i had the opportunity to teach part time since there are times when a twacher is absent and i voluntereed./////although it was only in a minor subject in hi school, i really enjoyed it very much.....my subject was HEALTH and it dwelled on pre marital sex, teenage pregnancies and almost all about the problems of being a teenager including family problems and old age......
i found out that almost all of thsese students have so many questions they cant ask their parents........everytime i finish my class i always feel so exhausted because i felt they all got my energy asking some more of life..i was lucky enuf to have experience and also being able to share to them what ive gone through, the happy and sad things during my teenage years and how i passed it w flying colors w the raging hormones and all......whew..........

I was like that in my high school years.
There are things that makes you feel awkward to ask your parents but you can ask other people that you TRUST. It is important for a teacher to teach well, and to gain the trust and respect of their students. There are important lessons that can greatly influence their decisions in life. A good teacher can bring out the best (or the worst) in an individual. Anne, now you can be happy thinking of the ppl you've nurtured. Teaching is not just a vocation, it is also a blessing.

2010年1月11日 4:38Re: Re: BAD TEACHERS
some teachers do abuse their position ...just because they thought the students can't fight nor complain they do many bad things....
Paying teachers is worse but it happened many times.....I had one 'corrupt" teacher who asked for money from us because he caught us cutting classes (we met in a movie house LOL!) He tried to blackmail us. Two of my friends paid, but I refused. He threatened to tell my parents. I told him with mock smile,.."My dad will surely get back at you if you make trouble for me. You can't fail me anyway, but I can surely have you out of job..." He returned the money to my friends, he said he was misinterpreted...he was just asking for donation for a school project he was planning that year. Surprisingly, he gave me high grades in his subject :)
I paid too for my PE and spanish class .... teachers who go into bribery and black mail shouldn't have a place in the academe.

Tutuo ka diyan! I am lazy too, and many students simply don't find interest in what their teachers are doing. With the bulk of school work we're supposed to do, some students are compelled to resort to this. Still, the teacher (supposedly role model/authority figure) shouldn't teach or allow students to bribe or be subjected to blackmail.

Thanks, sis. Surviving the school ordeal really helped me. I owe my teachers a lot.
I believed you've had the same experience too. I was told Japanese professors are very strict and demand nothing less than the best from their students. You are one tough survivor, Yuki. Your teachers should be proud of you :)

I had one bad experience during my college days, we had a requirement to accomplish which i did and gave it to my professor, i was shocked when i got my class card it was incomplete just because of that requirement and to think its just a minor subject. So i went to confront my professor in a nice way of course and he denies he had received one so i was forced to make another one so to avoid arguments.From that day on i did wish that professor be removed from the University . but that was before not now sis.

back to memory lane.... :)
Oftentimes the strict teachers drives us to study hard. I think we are compelled to study more in their subject than in subjects where teachers are kind and considerate. Yet the kind ones, not only stirs the mind. There are teachers that touches our heart, nurtures in us a compassionate person and teaches by right examples. I think they are the best.

trust me! if i start writing, u ppl will die laughing. i was one hell of a naughty boy in class. i never passed in my half yearly exam (we only had 2 exams in a year with 4+4 monthly exams). it was so embarrassing for my grand ma to respond to summon from my school.
we were strict to wear shoes in the class & proper uniform (navy blue pant). but, i rarely wear 2 at a time. so, there was a teacher, who throned me outta class nearly every day. when he came, i got out. i never was equal to the task of h/w either. so that helped. =))
as i was on my secondary certificate exam (S.S.C.), he was a teacher of computer science. he send msg to my home directly by a pion. i ran to meet with him & found that it was my practical exam running. i got stunned. i didn't know that the exam is taking place & i was 1 hour late. then he throned me outta exam hall & i was playing cricket. then that pion called me as he was send by the same teacher. then he gave me one of a exam sheet from one of a brilliant student from my batch & told me to copy it quickly. i ran with disbelieve. copied & submit it within 30 min. then at result, i got 80+ marks on that subject. how much should i thank him? :(
most of the teachers used to hate me in my school (below S.S.C.). that was i thought as i was never serious with education. first time my Head Master didn't permit me to read science. they thought i would never be able to read such a complicated subject. with my family's help the agreed after so much pushing. as i was passing S.S.C, my anxious grand ma talked with one of my english teacher & he told her that i'm actually a good student. i was surprised when i heard it from my granny after 7 yrs passing SSC.
there was a sir in my school who was called "mao" (the sound of a cat) & it made him angry whenever he heard it. one day, in my monthly exam i was returning from my exam hall, which was in another building & was about to enter my class room, a SOB screamed MAO & that teacher was the next class of my class room. he heard that, he screamed "who is that son of a cat made that noise? i'll put a tail on it & roam him full school". he picked that student & beat the hell up by hand with punches. then he came outta class & saw me standing, asked me "who did that?". i said, idk. then he started punching me on my left hand & back screaming "why u didn't saw?". i was laughing on that point. *dies laughing*
in H.S.C (higher secondary certificate), there was a biology teacher who looked like "LADY DIANA" to me. i was in love with her. i was having a day dream. not in a bad way though. she made me feel like my mom. i still miss that teacher! i saw her once at the time of passing my HSC while i was in field searching for RICKSHAW. i ran to just to talk to her for once. i gave her a hi & was standing with full of emotions. she said hi & understood my condition. then i felt bad & turned back & never return to meet her! it was heart breaking for me!!!
i've some other good one's too. but i think u ppl are bored :P
hey! ur topic is awesome! keep up the good work...

we were strict to wear shoes in the class & proper uniform (navy blue pant). but, i rarely wear 2 at a time. so, there was a teacher, who throned me outta class nearly every day. when he came, i got out. i never was equal to the task of h/w either. so that helped. =))

i had good teachers and bad teachers in my life... its only during the time of my studies... but after finishing my studies all of them had become my beloved teachers... its all related to how you and i look at others... that's you different peoples have different suggestions... any way all teachers should be respected by us... but God alone is a good teacher... most of the thing s i have learned is through my own daily experiences.

I kind of admire teachers who have high standards (aka, teahcer who gives hard times to students!) because somehow I become their pet student...Lollzz. I was The ideal studnet in Primary, in secondary...through out my college and even in Uni...
I remember one incidnet when in secondary school, we had a math homework. When it was returned, it appeared that everyone did it wrong accept me!! So, they got penalty. Next day, one of my class mates came forward ( I guess he got tipped by his parents) and challanged the teachers decision. It was then discovered that, it was actually me who did it wrong and everyone else did it right....Lollzzz I suppose teacher just saw that their answer was different than mine and thought they were wrong ( not very fair, I know...but life never is...Lollzz)
Good topic Gf. I love your topics...brings back memories. I have soo many sweet memories of my teachers.

ROFL. Your teacher is nice! :))
I think u already conditioned her mind that you are always doing it right.
I noticed intelligent and diligent students like strict, passionate, disciplinarian teachers because they learn a lot, and they become teachers’ pet while the rest are subject to strict control LOL who would want a student moron anyway ? hahaha campus life is really one whole great adventure :)
Thanks! :)))

Hah Vicky, it has been a while since i thought about my college professors. I think a lack of interest in the students is the definition of bad teacher but i have a story. As a graduate student as Case Western Reserve University I had a real a**hole professor. It was one of those nights i was up until 4:00 a.m. finishing a research report and handed it in. The next day we had class. I had made a typo in the title of my research paper (oops) and didnt catch it. My professor, in the middle of class asked me how i could be so stupid to do something like that......I flew off the hook. Kicked a desk out of the way and came after him, pushed him up against the wall, got in his face, said every mean thing i could think of to him. Amazingly the dean only gave me a warning for it. I feel lucky about it now
2010年1月11日 2:47Re: Re: BAD TEACHERS
what an experience LOL...but he is really stupid to see d small blunder and not ur great effort. I can relate to that, my "bad" teacher always make me repeat my case studies amidst the heavy workload I am handling in the university. I guess, there are many teachers doing that...:)
do you find something positive in this experience?

2010年1月11日 12:31Re: Re: Re: BAD TEACHERS
It is really quite surprising the mix of teachers you see, some really do want to help students, some would actually take the time to belittle students like this so they can feel better about themselves. I went to two of the top US engineering universities, MIT for undergrad and CWRU for graduate and they both had one thing in common: Most of the professors were true geniuses but cared very little for the students. I suppose it could just be the social awkwardness that seems almost inherent to being a genius. As far as positive.....simple, any mistake no matter how small is not acceptable.
Case Studies...psychology or medicine? If medicine everything i hear indicates that the overseas professors/programs are the most strict and difficult. I suppose that is the commonality of professors anywhere in the world, they want to make sure we don't make mistakes.

2010年1月12日 3:22Re: Re: Re: Re: BAD TEACHERS
" true geniuses but cared very little for the students" that is also one of the things I don't like in some of our professors. There is no way of reaching out to them. The students are just like a case or subject of study, nurtured, evaluated and re-evaluated based on certain standards. Failures are just not acceptable, they expect positive results. The advantage is that we are compelled to study and excel. We learn more by simply attending their lectures... more than what is in the curriculum or written in the books. The drawback with this kind of profs is that they hardly nurture the human spirit, a person with value for high morals, service, compassion, good values. Thus we are creating more competitive, techno-savvy, career-oriented ppl that care less for others and can't tolerate the malady of this world. We are in a generation oriented never to settle for mediocrity, thus many of us are restless and always wanting more. Hmmm.....just a personal opinion.

my teachers in high school were awful! omg.. if they didn't have the book to give them the answers, they'd have no way to answer anything..
the worst was mr. walpole (yea, i'll use his name) we had issues.. i named him the "math nazi" (which turns out, is still his name to this day, and i graduated in 03)
anyway.. past is past.. live and let die :)

Awww, you guys are just a bunch of powder puffs, ya'll don't know what a bad teacher is! lol!
...I had an Elementary school principal you wouldn't believe! His name was Mr. Krayjack. I think he was a Nazi or something. One morning when we were just starting first grade, he marched all the boys to a big shower room where we all had to get naked and stand in a cold shower all bunched together. He said "Now boys, I'm going to show you what happens to skippers and truants and other hoodlums." He brought in three boys from the sixth grade and made them strip and get wet. Then he dragged one of them out by the hair saying, "You little savages should all get haircuts, maybe I'm going to cut all your hair before you leave here"(he had a crew cut). Then he proceeded to give the kid the worst whipping I ever saw, with a rubber goolosh (a rubber shoe you wear over dress shoes during bad weather). He did the same to the other two little Indian kids, dragging them around by the hair. We were terrorized and traumatized, I don't think any of us ever skipped school during elementary. I witnessed a lot of savagery by the non-native teachers to the little native kids here, but they didn't bother me, because my Grandmom was the Chairwoman of the school board. When I told her about the first grade incident a few years later, that was the end of Mr. Krayjacks days at our school. I wish I knew who my grandmom was earlier! LOL! I've had other bad ones too, but he was the worst.

...yeah, he's lucky my Dad didn't find out. ...altho, I think the Clark boys he did that to didn't have a father. ...I think he got wasted in a war or something.
...I had a violent art teacher once, but that was when I lived somewhere else for awhile. ...If I saw him tonight, I'd give him a right hook! hehehe! Girlll, they whipped us when I was going thru school! Whipped us, switched us, an smacked us with rulers. ...in high school, they cought one of my friends shoot a spit-ball with a rubberband. They stood him in front of the class and made him take his shirt off. Then, everyone had to get in line and take your turn shooting him in the back. hehehe! I learned a lot in high school. ...there was some cool teachers tho, like my mechanics teacher...Yeah, I was on the football team, coaches put us thru hell. ...I was in town one friday night, and I stopped in this little bar to shoot pool where my friends were. I was under age having a beer, shooting pool and the coach walks up and puts his money down for next game. He was trying to act like one of my friends, bought me a beer and everything. He lost, I beat him easy. I was worried about my half drunkin coach there for a minute, but I guess he was an adult. I think he was a good teacher, but he might have been bad.
...Yeah, my remaining years weren't so bad (I was tough enough), teacher-wise anyway. ...except for the gangs! hehehe!!! College was fun tho, I drank a lot of beer in college! hahaha!!! ...Yeahhh, we sure tamed all those teachers down didn't we? hehehe! ...have a wonderful day now. ...thanks for letting me bore you with old stories. lol!

2010年1月10日 6:9Re: BAD TEACHERS
I know I was one of them lol
1) the nice people teachers who just cant teach, but still have respect of their pupils. I had one like that, He taught the class I was in maths, MY BEST SUBJECT, but that year My best subject no longer was my best subject.
2) Nice person but could teach, but not good with class control, This was probably me, I was too sensitive.... I tried for 21 years!
3) Could not teach, and not liked, bad control
4) could teach but hated because they are OVER strict and sarcastic
5) couldn't teach and hated because of over strictness!
6) Lazy teachers who could talk and be interesting, but ended up not teaching that which they were supposed to do!
Probably more different types .... But there are some for you to discuss!
I got round with my difficulties in two ways
a) I took a genuine interest, personality in my pupils
b) Took pupils out on trips
ANOTHER way was on days like April 1st!
When I was a boy, I always remember those poor teachers we tormented on April 1st! lol/. I vowed right from the beginning that would NOT happen to me! lol
On the days when school was on April 1st I gave all my pupils a SURPRISE TEST! They were told to have nothing on their desks except their pencil/pen boxes. I gave each a sheet of paper to write answers. then telling them strictly no looking till everyone had a copy of the TEST placed upside down on their desks by me.
Some complained. I told them to be silent! Then "TURN OVER" Some sat their arms folded, vowing NOT to do it as they had had no warning. Most had turned over, . I watched as cross looking faces started smiling, then some could contain themselves no longer and burst out laughing. Those who were refusing to turn paper over them peeped and realised that it was all a joke....It was such a pleasure to see their faces CHANGE! from anger to laughter!
Quote from the top of the EXANIMATION IN MAFFS
This sheet of paper, smothered in nonsensical, useless & incompetant material is badly in need of disposing of; - .... BUR. STOP* Do not immediately dispatch to the nearest waste ground, for what follows is of a highly secretaive nature, and is only fit for human consumption!. The most eggsighting part id the last part, but a sure knowledge of the intermediate parts might also be more or less a waste of time.
and more like that lol
Then the instructions
1) Do not attempt all the questions, some have no answer
2)Write your answrrs on both sides of the paper at the same time to three questions at once. (Do not use your feet!)
3) if you get stuck on a question use a little water to moisten the glue
4) If your pen runs out, do not follow it, wait for it to return
5)If the sun gets in youyr eyes, take it out!
Then followed some puzzle fun type questions.
The best set of answrs got prizes! lol
My goodness the classes was so well behaved that day
If anyone wants a copy of the complete "paper" just ask and I will give link to its picture lol
