OK.
We can't blame Akiho. I think this is due to wrong information we read or hear about Muslim women. There is a deliberate attempt to put the muslim ppl in a bad light and this bad propaganda had poisoned a lot of minds.
While I was doing my research I came across an article tackling this issue. I want to react negatively but I think there is some truth in it. We may or may not want to be considered a commodity but I think one way or another there are women that are treated as such. I may be wrong. I want to know the general perception on this. Every opinion matters ......

It happens everywhere. At least most women today are better educated and are more assertive, it is up to them whether they allow themselves to be exploited. For me (like most women) to be tagged as commodity in a men's world doesn't faze me a bit. I am not dependent on any man, have a decent work and I enjoy my money. Women has a choice.

in a way yes, and sadly too, i may say that sometimes women are a privy for being treated as such...........using their sexual prowess to get something, but i know in the end its still a losing battle.............there are cases maybe wherein they think they had it covered.but then again. its not an ideal thinbg for me........

...that's a pitiful and sad thought,sis...but Lucy Irigary is certainly entitled in her own opinion though, surely she has basis on her statement...such as women being commercial models in men's drinks, cars, etc. and it obviously sells coz these scenes are repeatedly done...
i'll say, it is on how a woman projects herself will she be treated as such..
*thanks...luv ya,too :)*

sexy pictures and celebrity endorsers are common
prostitution too... even in the net
b4 women tolerates this because they have no choice, they were sex slaves or victims of trafficking ....now women knew their rights and are better educated yet the abuse and exploitation continues, often with their consent .....

I don't think society per se treats women as commodities. The women who model put them self into the position to be hired as a commodity to sell a product (and there are male models)
Advertisers will use models to hype their products, cars etc.
A commodity to me indicates a sale or trading in an item, so whilst it may still occur in some parts of the world (maybe Indian culture (and others)) could be seen as that with arranged marriages, its semi subtle on society as a whole.
Amazonian tribes reversed that somewhat.
The true test would be a cash value for a person

well well...
sound so familiar to me this reply....
it is a copy paste from Queen Elisabeth ......
she rule England and people just submit to this
woman became herself a commodity if just let this to happen
and for some woman being a commodity is a valuable asset...
that can be a good trade in life market
nowadays this way of woman becoming is so trendy....
and by the way...
when a woman appreciate that she worth more from life ...it is just a finger close to became herself into this blamed commodity
where is mutual understanding is no room for commodity...
my queen...

I think women and men are equal, no higher, equally glorious creation of God. If in fact as if women like commodities which affect the market price, it depends on the willingness of the woman's established itself as the goods / commodities, not someone else. Is not the law of the market: there is selling then there is buying ?
2010年2月1日 2:9Re: Re: woman...a commodity?
We are equal in rights but different social roles ....
Women will determine her place in society, it is not the society that dictates her capacity and rights. Being restricted to a commodity is rather unfit description for many women but it happens. As long as women consents to this, to be considered a commodity or slave is still possible.

nope in general,.but there r some foreign countries used woman as commodity like they value woman with cost/ benefit,.for this women have no freedom to choose what they want in their lives,.
let say some other like muslim country ive read one of the article that a 17 yr old girl married to 40 yr old man,.the girl has no choice coz of there agreement of the parents,.sounds like they made exchange the wealth coz the man is rich,.maybe thats their tradition,.

Mankind is created by Allah for some specific reasons. From the beginning Adam and Eve, (for Muslims its Adam n Hawa)were put on earth to do good things as prescribed by Him (Allah). Indeed we hv come a long way since Adan n Eve. Along the way many people have chosen NOT to follow the right path and if by convenience they choose to do NOT the right deeds , as in this case treating women...a commodity, they will pay very dearly in the hereafter - even if they claim to believe there is no such being as Allah or God!
Vicky, u may like to put on forum too a topic to discourage the media from exploiting the female in advertising. I think that is sick!!

I think major religions in the world put strong words on respect for women. However, treatment of women differs among social groups and cultures. There is still trafficking of women and exploitation up to this day.
I agree with you that advertising exploits women but women tolerates this and there is little we can do about this. It seems many women finds easy money in this kind of job. A frustrating reality.

2010年1月27日 8:44Re: woman...a commodity?
some do-especially here in tz-its a tradition that a man has to pay something to the woman's family either be gift or money -but indirectly its like sellin the woman-as man usually becomes furious when she discover's that the woman is havin outside affair that he even mention's it that he either paid or gave somethin to woman's parents-yak indeed
2010年1月27日 11:7Re: Re: woman...a commodity?
Is this a tradition in Tanzania? social? religious?
We have this tradition in the muslim area in our country too BUT the gift is not considered payment.... the family regards their women so highly that they won't allow her to marry just anyone who cannot be financially stable to afford the gift they impose. Both families talk about this, and the gift (like dowry thing) is eventually used by the couple in starting their life together. The jewelry is a gift for the woman which she keeps or hands down to her daughters. Thus, I don't regard this tradition as making women a commodity... UNLESS the girl for marriage is forced to marry the guy who gives a generous gift, making this like buying the girl!

in tanzania is a tradition regardless of religion-and majority of man who married here usually they say that it hurts them much especially when they realise that they paid or gave gift to the woman's relatives and she betrays or cheats him afterwards// well I find that its like buyin a woman-as some men who cant afford the price or gift is usually regard as not normal and man is somehow forced to follow that tradition if he wants to marry-ofcourse not all but is majority practised

Men and Women were created equal, Woman have the same rights as men.A lot of woman now a days are successful with their careers just like here in the Phils. we have a lady President so i dont think women are treated just as a commodity but maybe in some areas that still exists as a reality and i dis agree to this idea.
2010年1月27日 12:45Re: woman...a commodity?
I think a woman is only treated as a commodity when she acts like on here in the US. The term "Gold Digger" applies. A woman can decide to use her "commodities" to attract a rich man for his money and not his love, or in the case of advertising for money. I dont have a problem with this since both parties are getting exactly what they want with no confusion.
For most men here in the US our wives are not commodities, you would be surprised how many women look at husbands as commodities, and our daughters are certainly not. I wont lie however, I have hear one of our VP's refer to his 22 year old girlfriend as an "upgrade" from his 55 year old ex wife. But once again the 22 year old is treating herself as a commodity and so other people will.

Grand, I truly believe for intelligent people it does not set a general reputation/impression. A reflective person of sound minds sees it for exactly what it is, A person profiting from their god given talents. Just as some of us were made to be doctors, some engineers, some can use their beauty to earn a living.
That said 50% of the people in this world are less than average intelligence. Perhaps they cannot see past the image being presented in the magazine or on TV.

i'm sure ur gonna kick my ass in this topic. but i can have some knowledge also no doubt...
"Women function like commodities on an exchange market in which their value is determined by masculine desires”
- Luce Irigary"
i don't think i can treat my girl like that. i never did either. i set her free even to kick my ask worst than anyone ever can :(
but i can't say that, what that lady said, is not false either...
ppl blames religion for treating girls like this. it's not true either. religions r for human. not for donkeys.
even me, myself, sometimes thought that it would be better if i were a girl when i was in medical college ;)
